The Greatest Generation

I shot the Veteran’s Day Parade yesterday and was surprised at how moving it was.  The most memorable moment for me was a WWII veteran walking alone.  This generation of soldiers, including my father, my father-in-law, my uncles, are mostly gone now.  I took my photos and I cried.

I have seen the parade on several occasions, and I agree, it is a moving experience when you step back and realize that this is not entertainment, but instead an event honoring men and women who fought for our country. I wonder what was going through the WW II vet’s mind, as he walked up Fifth Avenue. Thanks for sharing, Ellen.

Just look at him….walking tall and straight and proud! May his spirit live on through all of us with memories of our dear dads!

So moving. Could be any one of our fathers. They were so proud to serve for this country we are all so privileged to live in. Made me cry too.

Now I realize how few WWII veterans can walk in the parade. My father is one of the younger vets from that time at 86.

These men and women gave such great service. They never told us about it. They never complained. They didn’t ask for anything. A few years ago they got a World War II Memorial, long after others such as Vietnam and Korea had been built. The world is a much better place for what they did.

Your comments are as important as the photo. It sure was a different world back then – a time where there was so much patriotism… Who will walk next year??????
