Love this shot – especially the angles and lines, as well as the graffiti and the placement of the figure! Very urban and yet so reminiscent of earlier journeys. Well done 🙂
I love the tensions in this composition: the space vs. the crowding of the buildings, graffiti as an artistic expression vs. the defacing of public spaces. Nice!
It’s actually a sculpture of a boat prow that is a 1997 art project meant to memorialize the former Roosevelt Island boat landing. But with someone standing at the very tip, all I could think of was the immigrant ships coming to this country at the turn of the 20th century.
I believe that graffiti is done by people who don’t have a place to call their own. Perhaps the voyagers on the “ship” are looking for a home in New York. Great pic.
Like the bow of a ship, heading straight for land! Very cleverly composed.
Perspective is everything.
Very cool shot, Ellen! I like the old ship feeling but equally interesting is the graffiti that speaks to the newer America.

A clever title for a clearly composed photograph. The contrast between the rigid lines of the architecture and the quirky graffiti is especially nice.

The immigrants sailing to their new country must have felt so alone, like this person on the boat.
I imagine they felt alone and lost in a crowd all at the same time.
