View from 135th Street, 2013

I’ve been working on a series of photographs of water towers in the city for the past few years. Here’s one of my favorites:

Happy New Year, Ellen! I like the broad expance of this photograph, as well as the perspective of water towers in the foreground and the big city muted in the distance.

  2. Bruce says:

Sorry for the double entry (should have look at the the exhibition first, as well) – City Snow and Sunset Tower are my favorites on the new changing exhibition, which also has so many great shots!

  3. Simone says:

Wow! The changing exhibit is wonderful. I love Sunset Tower and City of Children, especially back-to-back the way you have them. One shows a tower’s form against a colorful sky, the other is atop meaningful graffiti and feels very urban. Interesting juxtapositions. In a city of noteworthy buildings, you’ve given voice to the less obvious and historic structures. Well done, as always!

A green light to City College. The sky’s the limit!

  5. Jan says:

Great perpspective with the city shadowed in the background.

  6. Jan says:

As for the “water towers collection”, I love them all, as I always appreciate the artistic viewpoint of your photgraphy.

Your beautiful isolation of an object we all use everyday and accept as part of our skyline without realizing it, is so nuanced and sharp. I love this series!

Ellen has always had a good eye for the unexpected New York. 🙂

What a great idea! – much like a lighthouse series – depicting a place and an era. I like all the photos, but this one the best because the water towers being in the foreground – darkened and larger, as if they are saying “look at us – we are still here, we are not just a blind spot in the cityscape!”

  9. Anne says:

This is a great series. The water towers help to make NYC what it is. I hope we never lose the smaller buildings and businesses to the gigantic corps and condos.

  10. Beverly says:

My favorite of all the water towers are the ones on the highline. They look like gigantic books should be placed between them – just like they could serve as bookends. I never gave much thought to water towers before your photos. I only remember looking for them when they were part of driving directions. Haha!

  11. Bernice says:

You’ve captured an amazing cloud swept sky above the water towers, and elegant, hazy building towers beyond them. Your low horizon reminds me of 17th century Dutch landscape paintings.

  12. Rae says:

I appreciate this shot, as it feels hushed due to the cool tones, but hopeful as we peer through the water tower into the city beyond. How exciting.

“Cosmetic” is an interesting perspective on the city. The water tower and dulling cosmetic sign reveal some kind of urban decay or ageing, while the leaves on the tree start to sprout once more, reminding us that there’s a new beginning once again.

Another favorite is “Towering”. The extreme verticality makes it stand out quite a bit in this exhibition and the block-like nature the buildings give this shot an abstract feel.

Great start to the new year, Ellen!
