Looks like a blizzard hit pretty bad! The old shuttered window and chimney pipe (?) are quite evocative of a poor rural shack in the snow. Glad our snowfall wasn’t as dramatic. The closeup view also reminds me of primitive ladder perspective. Nice!
My actual verbal reaction to this photo: “Oooh! OOOOOH!!!!” This is gorgeous and simple – I love the variation of textures, from the snow to the wood to the brick, and of course the choice to go B&W really makes this feel like a timeless view. Fantastic!
I feel like I have stumbled upon a long-lost negative of one of the Arctic expeditions of a hundred years ago, where desperate men struggled to survive in makeshift huts in the ice and snow.
What a fascinating photo, Ellen! My eye wanders back and forth between the white fluffy field, the stones below, the wooden door and then the mysterious block slot. Yet I can’t make up my mind on what I want it all to be. I will call it “thought provoking!” Well done.
Funny you say that Jacqueline. Obviously this was taken nowhere near the shtetl, but that’s what I thought too. Especially since my daughter and I have been researching our family history, the old towns in Eastern Europe are never far from my mind.

My first thought was a shtetl in Russia or some other very cold place. A powerful image!
