I was in Georgia recently, and saw a partially-torn-down house, where you could still see the step-treads that let up the brick wall that remained. Very Scheeler-like photo!

The historic national parks are like “snapshots” in time, capturing the feeling of American back in the ol’ days. So precious, so worthwhile to preserve; indeed something to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving!

Wow, what a dynamic shot! The contrast between the dark and the light creates lines and shapes that make this composition feel very abstract. The bowler hats, paired with the angle of the stairs, also add to the geometry in a really fun way.

Thanks for another great photo, Ellen!

  4. Simone says:

Love the lines in this one and the texture of the stairs. And those hats! You have such a great eye.

  5. Karen says:

    Great angles and light!

  6. Bernice says:

Your photo immediately made me think of Charles Sheeler! Great abstraction of geometric shapes, colors and 3-dimensionality. It could be a flat theater set for a mystery play. Really fun!

  7. Jacqueline says:

I particularly like the juxtaposition of all the patterns: in the 2 flights of stairs, the striations in the wall, and, of course, the hats!

  8. Jan says:

I love this angle shot of the stairs! And the worn out risers suggestion of many life stories.

  9. Bruce says:

There’s a ghostly quality in this photograph, Ellen. The stairs look worn, but it’s the bowler hats that bring me into the past. I can imagine workers picking up those hats from the shelf, putting them on, and walking slowly up the stairs.

  10. Anne says:

I really like this–the colors, shapes, textures. Great inspiration for an abstract painting.
