What a peaceful photo. The soft colors behind the umbrellas reminds me that spring is on its way and we just need to have a little patience.
The repetition of the lights on the right of the image adds an interesting element, as they seem to continue into the setting sun on the horizon. It takes the eye far back and makes us disappear into the twilight.
A wonderful photo, Ellen! It is a beautiful, serene scene, but what I really love are the repetitions in silhouette – 3 large umbrellas, 11 light fixtures in a row, 7 tall fence posts, 12 short fence posts, and I can’t even begin to count the squiggles of wire running horizontally and vertically. So visually detailed!
Wow! I’m so impressed with everyone’s take on this shot. When I took this photo what I saw were the lines of the umbrellas paralleling the lines of the fencing. The vertical elements and the angular lines coming towards them. I was also attracted to the striations of color, with the orange and blue next to each other, as they are complementary colors on the color wheel. It is a sunset shot from Pier 5 in Brooklyn looking over the East River to Manhattan. I took some great basic sunset photos but thought this was most interesting. Apparently you all agree! Thanks everyone.
I just love this photo – the silhouettes, the sun setting under the umbrellas, the curves and lines. Well done!
Peaceful, serene, simplicity of shapes as well as pleasing hues caught by our talented photographer.

Great shot, Ellen!
The black shapes silhouetted against a cloudless sunset form a remarkably lovely mood of serenity and organized calm.

Here’s what I see: The ocean and toward the horizon, three small islands and to my right, a row of trumpeters hailing the end of a lovely day!
As always, Bevy, I love your vision!
I like the balance of this shot, the gradation of color from top to bottom – or bottom to top! Just great!
I see 3 distant mountains rising out of the water. Maybe your photos could be a kind of rorschach test! Lovely.
