I love these Escher-like conundrums, where you try to figure out what goes where, how, and why. Old New York is so amazing!

  2. Simone says:

Such an interesting photo! Love the raw, gritty feeling of bricks and building materials, as well as the staircases, which almost look as if they lead nowhere. You also do a great job capturing lines and shapes, which remind me of your cityscapes – only indoors! Well done.

Love it! The stuff of an abstract painting!

  4. Joann says:

It’s an updated Escher, captivating in its mystery of going nowhere.

    An old New York walkup
Each level seemingly cut and pasted.
    Every tenant a separate unit
Yet an intricate part of the whole-not an inch of space wasted.

When I saw his photo I thought of the opening credits of West Side Story.

  7. Jan says:

OH Boy, M.C.Escher would be amazed that you captured in a photograph what he visualized in his mind.

  8. Bernice says:

I love the complicated structure and all the textures and colors. My hope is that this building (or is it 2 buildings?) is being demolished, rather than was hit by a gas explosion.

  9. ellen says:

Yes Bernice, I’ve been documenting the demolition of this six-story building.

  10. Bruce says:

Hi Ellen! I see lots of interesting structure and materials and grit, but what I really like to imagine are the ghosts of people who occupied the building over so many years, traveling the staircase up and down. Where do they go now?

  11. Audra says:

What a great image! I love the composition. Feels like a painting!

  12. Carolyn says:

You captured such beauty in the ugliness of a demolition. The colors and shapes are amazing. I don’t kknow how you do it.
