Lighting The Way

Excellent shot! I did a double take at first -it looked like the tower of a tall building, or even a statue on a roof, but I love that it’s a lighthouse, especially in near-silhouette against the bright blue sky. Truly lovely.

Reminds me of a shot of Mt. St. Michel: same perspective, same bulk. You have a great eye for contrast, and architectural photography.

At first glance, I, too, thought this was a sculpture of some kind. Somehow, and perhaps it’s the way the lighthouse sits high above, looking providing light to those below, it reminds me of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janiero. The more I study this shot, the more I grow to love it. Another great one, Ellen!

Love the contrasting shot here, Ellen! The dark shadows remind me of Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks diner painting.

Was this shot made in Washington Heights? There’s a little lighthouse on top of a building near the GW Bridge that this brings to mind. Anyway, the pristine blue sky is a magnificent background for the dark mass of the building and the slender red miniature lighthouse. Beautiful!

Yes, Bernice, this lighthouse stands atop a residential building in the Bronx, and is visible from the Major Deegan Expressway. I’ve passed it hundreds of times but the light was hitting it on such a beautiful angle and the sky was so crystal clear that it called to me! I was wondering if any New Yorker would recognize it. Just proves that you can find art anywhere, you just have to keep your eyes and mind open to it!
