It was truly amazing! In the more than a dozen years that I’ve been going to the Jersey Shore, I’ve seen plenty of dolphins but never whales. And you are right, not an easy photograph to catch!!
Yes it was a bitter cold but very clear day. There was nothing in sight on the ocean, and no one else around. I never go anywhere without my camera, thank you MaryJane, so I was prepared. First there was the spray from the blow hole, which if you look carefully, I caught in this shot. Then the whale emerged. I took 10 photos in less than that many seconds and caught the whale in several of them. This was the best one. When I went back the next day, the ocean was filled with an armada of whale watching boats. And of course, the whale was nowhere to be seen!!
Wow. That’s something you don’t see every day.
Amazing so close to home. Hard to even see when they briefly emerge from the water, so, great catch with the camera.

Totally awesome shot, Ellen! Not easy to catch at just the right moment. I think you even got him to smile!
Wow, what a beauty! So awe inspiring!
I was lucky enough to take a similar picture many years ago–it’s wonderful to capture such a thrilling moment!
Absolutely AMAZING – the occurrence and your gorgeous shot! Thanks for bringing us to the beach with you for such a special sighting.
It looks like it must have been a cold, cold day, but you persevered, and captured a once-in-a-lifetime image! Brava.
Once again, you’ve captured “the decisive moment.” Amazing shot! Thanks for letting us know it’s a whale. This landlubber would not have known.
